It’s never too late to be the person you might have been. — George Eliot
Living in Kent has its perks, but let’s face it, it’s quite a trek from London. With the latest push to reduce road use and cram people into trains like sardines, driving is often the best option. So, there I was, hopping into a car with my son, determined to detox from all media. The driver had the news blaring, and I quickly switched gears, opening my laptop and politely asking if he could play some classical music to help me think and write.
Our conversation took an interesting turn. The driver began unloading a litany of complaints, much like someone on a fast food binge lamenting their health without realising they’re doing it to themselves. By overloading his mind with negative news stories, he was unknowingly shaping his own mindset. This made me realise how the dialogue we maintain within ourselves can either build us up or tear us down. There is no issue with keep ones self informed, but only if you are ready to do something about it.
When you meet someone whose life radiates tranquility and fulfilment, it’s often because their inner dialogue is peaceful and supportive. On the other hand, if someone’s life is chaotic, it’s usually a reflection of the turmoil within. The words we whisper to ourselves hold immense power—don’t underestimate them. Nurturing an inner dialogue that supports your dreams is essential.
Think about how we often criticise politicians for making promises they don’t keep. But before judging them, let’s look at our own lives. Are we living mindfully and consistently with the promises we make to ourselves and others? Aligning your intentions with your words is tough but vital. When you manage this alignment, you become less judgmental and more positive, creating a cycle where positivity feeds positivity.
Just saying we believe in our dreams isn’t enough. True change happens when our internal belief matches our spoken words. Positive self-talk increases the chance of this alignment. This harmony between inner and outer dialogue is where true transformation occurs—where the magic happens.
Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a call to transform from being a consumer to a creator, from a follower to a leader.
Learn to follow your own commands. Lead yourself first, and others will naturally follow.
Remember, you’ve been with yourself longer than anyone else. You know your hidden fears and untapped potentials. Identify what needs to change in your character. Bring these aspects into the light and work diligently to transform them. As your self-awareness grows, the entire world becomes your classroom.
So, take control of your inner dialogue and start building the life you’ve always dreamed of. It all starts within you.
