“You were born an original, don’t become a copy!”
- Coco Chanel
In the wake of Elvis Presley’s departure from this mortal realm in 1977, the popular press predicted that in a few years, droves of men would begin walking and talking like the King himself. A similar trend emerged following the passing of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, as millions sought to emulate his remarkable prowess. Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and a multitude of others—icons who left an indelible mark. What is it about these revered figures that stirs within us an ardent desire to emulate them?
I postulate that it is because these legendary beings serve as mirrors, reflecting the latent potential we instinctively perceive within ourselves. Yet, when confronted with the initial strains of adversity on the path to realising such potential, we often recoil rather than rise to the occasion. However, the luminaries mentioned above encountered obstacles of their own, and yet, armed with unwavering fortitude, they shattered those barriers.
When a star’s genuine essence radiates brightly, it ignites a spark within us to do the same. It is only natural for us to admire and gravitate toward those who embody their own legendary existence. For, when all is said and done, who shall remain etched in our collective memory—the authentic original or the mere impersonators?
To live authentically is to embrace the essence of one’s unique journey. It is to understand that our individuality is our greatest asset. Every experience, every trial, and triumph, moulds us into beings unlike any other. The path to authenticity is not devoid of challenges; it is replete with them. Yet, it is in overcoming these very challenges that we uncover our true selves. Like a sculptor chiseling away at a block of marble to reveal the masterpiece within, we must chip away at our fears and insecurities to let our authentic selves shine forth. Remember, it is not the shadow of greatness that we should seek to inhabit, but the light of our own truth that we must endeavour to cast.
Exercise: Stop identifying with any limitations whatsoever. Instead, connect deeply with your true desires and envision the person you aspire to be, think it, act it, embody it until you breath life into it. By doing so, you will activate your true brilliance and unlock your full potential.
